Korean food is to kimchi as Italian food is to...

...sweet pickles?

That's what I thought, too. Sitting in the spaghetti restaurant and watching everyone get served little dishes of sweet pickles with their meal.

But if you think about it, a meal WITHOUT pickles is probably unthinkable to Korean diners. That would be like having no salt and pepper on the table in a restaurant.

Personally, I thought serving dishes of little sweet pickles with an Italian meal was a creative solution to a cultural dilemma.

Somehow sweet pickles with western dishes are very appropriate in the society. It's very interesting to think that sweet pickles are extremely exoctic to Koreans. If the students took you there, they probably thought that they should impress you with some fancy western food. They are very thoughtful in general. They assume that you don't like Korean food.
