Dear friends and fans, in homage to my friend and fellow blogger Michael5000, whose weekly Thursday quiz is a favorite ritual of many, I offer this multiple-choice question. You may submit your answer as a comment, or by email, snail, message in a bottle, or carrier pigeon. I will post the correct answer when I feel like it (probably in about 3-5 days).
Here's the question:
Today is Pepero day in Korea, a holiday celebrated nationwide as
a) the birthday of a Spanish cartoon character who is much beloved in Korea, though unknown in North America
b) the anniversary of the historical naval victory of Admiral I Soon Shin over the Japanese using turtle boats
c) the official end date of the pear harvest, after which the poor may collect any remaining pears
d) the day on which people exchange gifts of long, chocolate covered cookies resembling the numeral 1 (for 11/11).
Step right up. Make your vote count! And make my day.

I vote for A. Even if it's wrong and no such thing exists, it totally should, Pepero is a great name for a cartoon character!
CHris S. agrees and votes for A
(and so does the other Chris)
Based on my complete and total lack of knowledge of the Korean culture... I'm going to guess C, the end of the pear harvest.
Pear Harvest! Pear Harvest!
Great range of responses! You've got some awesome wrong answers going on here!
Oh, and thanks for -- you know -- the homage. I LOVE homage!
Humm, I love the choices, but I'm going to pick D. Why, you ask. Because I'm a good internet explorer, that's why :-).
Aw, Jen, you're not supposed to CHEAT! Well, the game's up...Jen was right. The correct answer is D. Pepero is a brand of long, thin cookies. In the U.S., as well as in Japan, it is known as Pocky. On Pepero day people give this, and a lot of other chocolaty snacks, to friends and loved ones. Think Valentine's day in November, but without all the baggage about true love. Just a good ol' commercial holiday.
OK, I'm guessing B, although any holiday involving the exchange of chocolate would have my sentimental vote. Except I don't know what a turtle boat would be. I suppose some sort of chocolate-covered praline coracle, notoriously difficult to handle in rough seas.
Darn! late to the snack tray once again!
@Mrs.5000: Ask Mr.5000 where your Pepero Day chocolate is! You might also want to notify him of subsequent elevenths: White day and Black day and I think there's some other day I'm forgetting. I'll check on the details and get back to you. Living in Korea affords a host of occasions to extort chocolate from others.
But then, you DID marry the best cookie maker this side of Kansas; with him around, I'm sure you find plenty of occasions for cookie extortion already. (On the other hand, cookie extortion is a double-edged sword. For my part, my friendship with M5K was a fairly casual one until the day I came over for cookies...coincidence???)
Uh oh, I ruined it for everyone. Sorry about that folks. From now on, I promise not to cheat on Heather's Korean quizes. Jennifer
